ToggleWhat is Foam Sclerotherapy?
If you’re looking for a vein clinic that offers state-of-the-art treatments to eliminate your varicose veins, look no further. As a premiere vein clinic in the Chicago / North Shore area, Rosen Vein Care offers a very safe, effective, comfortable treatment called foam sclerotherapy to accomplish this goal.
How Does It Work?
Sclerotherapy in general is a non-surgical procedure in which Dr. Rosen injects a chemical called a sclerosant into the varicose vein. This chemical starts a process that convinces your body to close the vein and permanently seal it and help it fade away over time.
Time is the key element to remember: sclerotherapy starts a process that your body finishes; healing takes time…from weeks to even months depending on the extent of a patients issues.
In foam sclerotherapy, a “soapy” chemical called Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate (STS) is used. This detergent sclerosant is able to be turned into a foam which is then injected into the varicose vein.
The beauty of foam sclerotherapy is that a dilute solution of STS is actually rendered more effective at treating larger-sized veins merely by foaming it, rather than having to resort to a stronger concentration of chemical.
What Happens During The Procedure?
Once ensuring the patient is comfortable, Dr. Rosen will locate the target vein. By using either a special gadget called a veinlite or ultrasound guidance, the chemical can be safely ensured to be placed within, and not next to, the vein.
At the end of the procedure, some gauze and tape is applied over the treated vein(s). Compression stockings are then placed. Following this, the legs are elevated for 10 minutes. Then you are on your way! Patients can return to most routine activities IMMEDIATELY after the procedure.
What Happens After The Procedure?
Patients are recommended to wear the compression stockings for a few weeks. While the data is limited, research suggests that results may be improved by wearing compression stockings as directed.
While we would love for all patients to need only one treatment, realistically speaking, it may take several treatments, spaced out 2+ weeks apart, to reach optimal results.
