In under 2 weeks we\u2019ll be celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of my oldest child, Jacob. He\u2019s a great kid (apple\u2026tree\u2026\u2019nuff said) and I couldn\u2019t be more proud to be his Dad for too many reasons to mention during this short post\u2026so I\u2019ll spread the kvelling out over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bar Mitzvahs are really happy celebrations. And\u2026like many other big milestone celebrations in life\u2026there\u2019s a lot of stress to be had during the planning process. My sister is way more JuBu about things and exudes a calm aura. That gene, as it relates to party-planning, must have skipped being passed on to me: as we come down to the wire I\u2019m starting to get a little frazzled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that\u2019s weird\u2026because , as you may or may not know, my background is also in Emergency Medicine. During and after my training, I was intellectually, mentally and any other \u201c\u2013ally\u201d\u2026 ready to deal with whatever landed on my doorstep during the shifts in the ER. And I saw enough crazy and frazzleworthy stuff to last a lifetime. So why should some happy party cause such a mental kerfuffle? Why do we get stressed out in general?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n I think the answer to that question is: Unfamiliarity<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the ER, just as things would be at their most frazzly and kerfuffly, in my mind\u2026things would just get quiet and focused\u2026slow down. I had the knowledge base\u2026the experiential templates to draw from. I didn\u2019t know what to expect behind the curtain, but whatever it was I could compartmentalize it and work out an algorithm to handle it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it all starts with knowledge and familiarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n [context alert\u2026here\u2019s where Dr Rosen starts talking veiny stuff\u2026finally]<\/p>\n\n\n\n So\u2026I see a lot of patients who start off feeling anxious about their varicose and spider veins. Anxious about how they look\u2026about the treatment process\u2026about costs\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n My answer to that is, again: knowledge and familiarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I spend an hour with my patients during their initial consultation appointment. A big part of that time is spent in teaching about vein problems in general and relating those concepts to the patient\u2019s specific issues. I answer as many questions as are asked and am happy to repeat anything that didn\u2019t make sense at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We talk openly about the treatment process. Patients are comforted to learn that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n So\u2026when the time comes for the next big event in my family\u2026I\u2019ll be all over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speeches? No prob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DJ? Covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Food? Drink? Done and Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now\u2026how about you and your veins?<\/p>\n\n\n\n No worries\u2026truly.
