No, he wasn\u2019t serious. Yes, he was a freaking marketing genius. His satire was so inflammatory and provocative that we\u2019re still mentioning it almost 300 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those of you who don\u2019t already know and love me, I\u2019m Dr. Dave Rosen and I do my best to relieve society of the burden of varicose and spider veins. I do a fair amount of reading on the topic\u2026in print and on the web\u2026and it\u2019s during my web travels that I invariably encounter ads in the top\/side of the screen in the search engines \u2026ads where certain vascular surgeons tout the fact that they are the better way to go when it comes to vein treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Look, I\u2019m not one to be provocative or inflammatory [pause for laughter from those who know me], but I didn\u2019t start the provocation this time. I may agree with \u201cWhy a Vein Center?\u201d\u2026I\u2019m not into assembly-line medicine either. But if you\u2019re asking provocative questions, a more reasonable one to ask might be \u201cWhy a vascular surgeon <\/em>at all?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m just not sure the surgeons have a winning argument at a time when the state-of-the-art treatment for superficial vein disease involves non-surgical approaches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here\u2019s a similar argument and another modest proposal: We all need to give up digital watches and go back to grandfather clocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No\u2026wait\u2026we all need to give up using cell phones and go back to using land lines, specifically on rotary phones, to communicate with each other. Or better still\u2026 we can just return to a time without phones\/telegraphs\/cuneiform tablets\u2026when we just talked to each other directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Downsides:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Upsides:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sure, back in the day\u2026and that day, by the way, was some time around the turn of the millenium\u2026surgery was the way to go to treat superficial venous insufficiency. That\u2019s because it was the only way. The whole reason for the drive to develop new, non-surgical techniques wasn\u2019t because, ahem, the surgeries were so effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That was a thinly-veiled way of saying they had a higher rate of complications and recurrences\u2026had more post-procedure discomfort\u2026and downtime\u2026than patients would tolerate. So a lot of people avoided treatment altogether; in retrospect, not such a bad plan\u2026until now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If Necessity is the Mother of Invention, \u201cSticking To Outmoded, Inferior Things\u201d is Invention\u2019s goofy cousin<\/strong>; someone Invention only tolerates seeing on Thanksgiving\u2026and even then, Invention makes sure to sit WAY on the opposite end of the table\u2026while Aunt Patience is stuck sitting next to \u201cOutmodo\u201d and has to listen to him drone on and on about the virtues of horse-drawn carriages and the Commodore Vic 20 computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So\u2026about 15 years ago, some clever people\u2026non-surgeons included\u2026adapted techniques being used for non-surgical approaches to other vascular problems\u2026and came up with ways to treat the underlying issue for many with symptomatic varicose veins: superficial venous insufficiency\u00a0[if you want to learn more about that disorder, click here].<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rather than physically stripping veins out of the body, veins can be left in place and closed internally by using\u00a0various methods. All of this can be accomplished using a bit of local anesthetic and through a nick the size of a paper cut that doesn\u2019t even require sutures to close. Be that as it may, paper on a wall means little. What my patients want is the same thing I want. I want to go to a doc with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I want the same doc who meets me to be only person who treats me.
