{"id":401,"date":"2024-02-14T07:23:17","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T07:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rosenveincare.com\/?p=401"},"modified":"2025-10-26T22:33:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T05:33:26","slug":"fauxcellarm-y-venas-varicosas-no-lo-se","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rosenveincare.com\/es\/blog\/fauxcellarm-and-spider-veins-i-dont-know\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00bfAra\u00f1as vasculares y brazos falsos? \u00a1No lo s\u00e9!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though I work in a small niche on the frontier of modern medicine\u2026Phlebology\u2026or the field devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins and spider veins and the underlying issues that may lead to them\u2026I really try to keep up with new and innovative ideas in many fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the problems that doctors deal with have been around since\u2026well\u2026people have been around. Inflamed things, aches, clogged things, swollen things. Over time we\u2019ve amassed textbooks full of clever ways of finding reasons and fixes for those problems. I know, I\u2019ve read a bunch of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However\u2026some problems are truly recent and we only have ourselves to blame. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ipanemia: The inability to get the song \u201cThat Girl From Ipanema\u201d out of your head once someone puts the idea there. Sorry I just did that to you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Text Thumb: arthritis of the first digit due to excessive texting. I don\u2019t think its really a thing yet, but I expect current teens will discover they have this in 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retinitis Zohanosis : the inability to \u201cunsee\u201d Adam Sandler\u2019s \u201cZohan\u201d movie. While there is no cure, one soothing balm for those nasty flare-ups might be to watch Spanglish or Blended instead\u2026or read anything by Neal Stephenson (new book, Seveneves\u2026awesome!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some real issues are purely as a result of technology. I try to keep up as best I can\u2026sometimes some things slip under the radar. The one that has been lurking around for a few years but only recently came to my attention was \u201cPhantom Vibration Syndrome\u201d or \u201cFauxcellarm\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Im not sure if you\u2019ve experienced it\u2026but I know I have\u2026and that is the feeling that your thigh is buzzing because the silent vibration ringer on your cellphone is going off\u2026only to learn that it didn\u2019t actually happen. You\u2019re not crazy; it really is a thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s happened to me a few times, but I never knew there was even a word for it until a patient recently came to see me in consulation and thought that the odd vibrations she was feeling related to some spider veins on her lateral thigh that had been present for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a thorough history and exam\u2026including a neurologic exam\u2026and an ultrasound to determine if any underlying superficial venous insufficiency was present (there wasn\u2019t any)\u2026I had to tell the patient something that I am very comfortable saying, when appropriate: I DON\u2019T KNOW. Sure, veins can be symptomatic..even tiny ones\u2026but they don\u2019t typically make you feel like your thigh is buzzing. Hence, \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d is probably the single-most important phrase a doc can learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BUT\u2026it has to be followed up with the commitment to look for an answer. So, I spent part of the weekend doing what any nerd with a passion for knowledge (and a strong feeling of guilt instilled by an uber-jewish-mother) would do: I looked it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I love more than the fact that I actually found a potential answer to the \u201cvibrating thigh\u201d question, was that someone came up with such a clever name as \u201cfauxcellarm\u201d\u2026genius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See..docs have senses of humor,too! In fact, I can admit that&nbsp;residency (plural for me)\u2026was (were) a lot of work, but PLENTY of good clean nerdy fun! I often tell folks that it\u2019s like year-round [nerdy] summer camp: like-minded youngsters with similar interests learning arts and crafts (albeit scientific ones like placing IV lines, fancy skin closures), playing video games (endoscopy, endovascular techniques, lapraroscopy\/robotics) and eating smores. Only substitute \u201cbad cafeteria pizza\u201d with smores. Good times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So\u2026let\u2019s recap today\u2019s post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Phantom Vibration Syndrome (fauxcellarm) is a thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Being able to say \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d is what got us out of the caves\u2026into civilization\u2026printing books\u2026flying, to Pluto &amp; beyond\u2026AND\u2026every signficant medical breakthrough ever made. I\u2019m cool with saying it\u2026it leaves me in pretty clever company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Embarking on a medical carreer is tough\u2026but it\u2019s plenty of fun. Other than being a husband and dad, there\u2019s no greater feeling than helping to fix a broken person [that sentence is BEGGING to be put in jump quotes\u2026so I will].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Other than being a husband and dad, there\u2019s no greater feeling than helping to fix a broken person\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK\u2026got that out of my system. I think I may have come down with Quotidian Fever.
