{"id":398,"date":"2024-02-14T07:16:10","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T07:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rosenveincare.com\/?p=398"},"modified":"2025-10-26T22:25:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T05:25:28","slug":"decision-eleccion-medicos-venosos-solo-puede-haber-uno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rosenveincare.com\/es\/blog\/decision-choice-vein-doctors-there-can-be-only-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Decisi\u00f3n, elecci\u00f3n y m\u00e9dicos de venas: solo puede haber uno"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">doctor t in the operating room for surgical venous vascular surgery clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of you know that I used to be an attending physician in an Emergency Department before I did more training\u2026passed another board exam\u2026and worked as a vein doctor\u2026specializing in diagnosing and treating spider veins and varicose veins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of my patients have asked if I missed being in the ER\u2026missed the \u201cexcitement\u201d\u2026missed the variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some aspects yes, some no,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Yes side: I miss the absolutely miraculous experience of instantly relieving troubles\u2026pain, nausea, fear. The delicious taste of being right about a diagnosis and in a critical second making a fix that sends a loved one home with their family instead of\u2026not. The list of plusses is long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the No side: I really dont miss the variety of drunken idiots and their various ways of being a nuissance before they vomit on me and\/or my co-workers. Do you now wonder less about why ER docs wear scrubs instead of formalwear? The lists of minuses is also very long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But\u2026missing things is not the same as being rueful about things. I don\u2019t regret my decisions one bit. I don\u2019t regret my days in Emergency Medicine, I don\u2019t regret the choice to change gears either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hmmm\u2026that also brings up another philosophical point:&nbsp;decisions&nbsp;vs&nbsp;choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You: Waitaminnit Dr Dave\u2026is there a difference between the two?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me: Turns out, there is\u2026ahem\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decisions are whittling away\u2026like Jed Clampett on a piece of wood\u2026at options\u2026employing some logic\u2026following some kinda algorithm maybe\u2026until you are left with the path to take that suits you best. And like Jed, sometimes that path leads to \u201cbubblin\u2019 crude\u201d\u2026\u201dtexas tea\u201d\u2026and other times, just crawdads. Decisions require some thinking, reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choice means selecting. That\u2019s it. Sometimes you have more than one option, other times just the one. Choices require pointing and doing. Sounds simpler than \u201cdeciding\u201d but way, way harder to do in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK\u2026so let\u2019s bring this closer to home. Many of my patients\u2026especially the ones who are annoyed by chronic symptoms such as leg swelling, cramps, restless legs, tired\/heavy legs\u2026along with varicose veins and spider veins\u2026have decided that it\u2019s time to do something about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s great and all\u2026but quite often there\u2019s a gap\u2026sometimes the size of the one between David Letterman\u2019s front teeth\u2026other times like the Grand Canyon\u2026.between Decision and Choice. That gap is really normal and understandable. Change\u2026even for the better\u2026is sometimes difficult to do. Inertia keeps the Voyager probe going off towards other galaxies\u2026but it also keeps a moon rock in the same place for millions of years. Funny stuff, inertia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cInertia keeps the Voyager probe venturing off towards other galaxies\u2026but it also keeps a moon rock in the same place for millions of years\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When circumstances were such that I went \u201csolo\u201d, &nbsp;I had the opportunity to create not only a practice but a culture of how I wanted to care for and interact with patients. I wanted to have a place where patients feel that it\u2019s a no-brainer to make a choice of where they wanted to receive their vein care. I followed a very simple guide with only one rule to follow: create a place that I would want to go to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So\u2026what would get me off my tush and onto the road to happier legs? What would be on my wish list of qualities in a vein treatment practice? Here they are:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doc must know what he is doing; must be board-certified.CHECK!I\u2019m actually one of less than a thousand docs accross the world who has achieved certification by the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Booyah! It hangs on the wall next to the other 2 board exams I\u2019ve passed in the past\u2026Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Triple-Booyah!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019d want continuity; not a different person involved with different aspects of my care.CHECK!I\u2019m the only person involved with every aspect of my patients\u2019 care from first visit to last.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want to have discussions, not be condescended to, regarding my care.CHECK!I\u2019m an advisor\u2026the patient is the \u201cPresident Of Their Body\u201d. I do my best to make sure that POTB is updated with all relevant info to make the best DECISION they can\u2026and CHOOSE wisely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want transparency regarding, well\u2026.EVERTHING. Medical things. Financial things. All of it.CHECK!I hate surprises (party-planners take note) and I\u2019m sure my patients do too. There is no such thing as a bad question. Bring a list with you to your consultation\u2026or to every visit for that matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want the reassurance to know that my doc is approachable and findable.CHECK!Every patient gets my email address and cell phone number. Despite this, I rarely get emails\/calls. Wanna know why? First, thank G-d, the procedures are low-risk with minimal, if any, residual discomfort. Next and most important\u2026I make sure that Ive spelled out what to expect before\/during\/after all procedures [see surprise-hatred above]. Nonetheless, if you need me, I\u2019m findable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I wouldn\u2019t mind it so much if the doc was a good conversationalist\u2026given the fact that there is no sedation with procedures\u2026which leaves ample talk-time.CHECK!I\u2019ve been listening to myself for almost 45 years and I\u2019m still not tired of me! Heheheh. Sigh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So\u2026those are the things that I thought would be key in creating the best experiences for my patients. You are free, and encouraged, to look around; refer to my checklist when you do.
